Millions of Syrian civilians are fleeing their country because of the war.
The horrifying events of the war have caused many Syrian civilians to lose everything, including their homes, their livelihoods and sometimes even their family members. Many Syrians have chosen to leave their homes to find a new place to live. This has caused a massive amount of people leaving Syria and entering the neighbouring countries.
Because of this, the countries surrounding Syria have been overwhelmed by the number of people fleeing the war. |
In this video, John Green gives an overview of the Refugee crisis.

Millions of refugees are searching for a new home after being displaced by the war. Many have gone to refugee camps in places such as Turkey and Lebanon.

Refugee CampsMany of the refugees from Syria are currently living in refugee camps run by organizations such as the U.N., set up in Lebanon, Turkey, and other places.
Although the organizations running the camps are doing their best, conditions in these camps are often very poor. The people live in tents without much privacy. Disease is also present because of the large number of people. There is not a lot of food and the camps are often very dirty. |
Conditions in the refugee camps are extremely unpleasant

The Story of Alan KurdiAlan Kurdi was a three-year-old boy who fled Syria with his father, mother and older brother in the summer of 2015. The family hoped to find a way to Canada to join relatives there.
On September 2, Alan's family boarded an inflatable raft to make their way to Greece. The boat capsized, drowning many of the refugees on board, including Alan, his mother, and his older brother. Alan's body washed up onto a nearby beach and in the morning a photographer came by. The Turkish photographer took pictures and these photos went viral on social media almost immediately. Alan had become a symbol of all the Syrian children that had lost their lives because of the war. Alan's father later delivered a message for the world, telling people to open their doors to Syrian refugees. This event caused many individuals to change their view of the refugee crisis. |
The World's Response

Most countries around the world have been slow to respond to the Syrian refugee crisis. Although these refugees have asked for help, most countries in the European Union have agreed to take in only a tiny number of refugees.
Not all countries are failing to assist, however. After hearing the story of Alan Kurdi, Germany announced that they wished to take in as many of the refugees as they could manage. By 2015, Germany had accepted 476 000 refugees and they are still taking in more this year.
Hungary has also been aiding refugees, and they have the largest number of refugees in proportion to their population in Europe.
