Syrian WAR
The Leader of SyriaBashar al-Assad was first voted President of Syria after his father's death in 2000. The minimum age for a person running for president was lowered in order for al-Assad to be able to run. At this time Syria had a long history of older leaders, so at 34 Bashar was seen as a young leader who would bring change to the nation of Syria. Bashar al-Assad was unopposed when running for president and obtained 97% of the vote.

Violence and chemical weapons
One of the reasons other countries such as the United States are getting involved in the war is because the Syrian civil war has been so violent and has hurt so many civilians.
In August 2013, rockets filled with a chemical known as nerve agent sarin were fired at a number of suburbs in Damascus. This attack killed hundreds of innocent men, women and children. Countries in the west believed this attack was carried out by the Syrian government; however, the government claimed it was the fault of the rebel forces.
No matter who is using them, these chemical weapons are a terrible way to fight and have harmed many civilians. The United Nations have created rules in the past in an attempt to stop the use of these inhumane weapons. When Syria used them, the government was asked to destroy all of their chemical weapons.

War crimes such as rape, murder and torture have been performed by all sides involved in the conflict as well. Many civilians have also suffered because access to food and water and healthcare has been blocked. This terrible violence is not only affecting the soldiers fighting in the war, it is also taking its toll on the innocent civilians of Syria. |
